My name is Jay Gaulard and I live in western Maine, USA. It’s taken me five years of living in this wonderful state to fully commit to the lifestyle that’s afforded to me. Up until now, I’ve hesitated to become totally involved with the outdoors thing, but now I’m in. Completely in. And I can’t get out.
I’ve always been interested in camping. It began when I was a kid. My parents would bring my brother, sisters and me to various campgrounds on the east coast for vacation each summer. I actually can’t remember a time when we didn’t go. As I got older though, my family gave up on the vacations and I was left to my own devices. In the past 20 years or so, I’ve only gone camping once or twice. Once for sure, but maybe twice. I can’t remember the second time. Whatever the case, it’s a shame.
I really do love the outdoors. Actually, the entire impetus for this newfound interest in it has to do with my purchasing of a ten acre forest that sits adjacent to the five acres I already owned. If you know anything about western Maine, you know that it’s full of woods. We really have no shortage of land to go around. Everyone up here is into doing something outdoors, I just had to find my own way.
So here’s the deal – I now own 15+ acres of the nicest land you’ll ever see. I’ve got huge white pines, white and black spruces, hemlock, maples, ash trees and so much more, right at my fingertips. The best part about my property is that it’s bordered by a stream along one boundary (five acres) and a brook on another (three acres). The remaining boundaries are all wooded. Overall, I’ve now got a good chunk of pristine woodlands that includes some wetlands, some good terrain and tons of privacy. It’s a miracle that I found myself in this situation. I never thought I’d be in a position like this.
On March 9, 2019, I went winter camping for the very first time. The temperature dropped to 4° Fahrenheit overnight and it was during this experience that I discovered what all the talk is about. We camped right on my land and I can tell you that there’s nothing like the feeling of braving the elements and waking up in a nice warm sleeping bag to the morning sun. It was an incredible achievement and I’d like to do more of this type of activity in the future.
I already hike a lot. In Maine, there are thousands of trails that will feed your hunger for day hikes, week hikes or anything in between. We’ve got lakes and mountains and I’m just thrilled with the beauty of my surroundings. I do want to reiterate that I live in western Maine, which is full of gorgeous nature. It takes me an hour to reach the closest highway. I’m in the middle of the wooded world and I’ve taken some pretty good advantage of it.
I decided to include a few photos of myself below. The first one was taken before an incredible winter hike up in Carrabassett Valley in Maine. The particular trail we hiked led to the Poplar Hut in the Maine Huts & Trails system. I think this photo is from 2018.
This next picture was taken in 2019 and it’s from a hike we took near the south end of Clearwater Lake in Industry, Maine. The hike was actually in New Sharon, Maine, but the lake is in Industry. This was a fun short one through the snow.
This final photo was taken in February 2019. My lady and I were driving through a local town and we saw a parking lot that was situated in a stand of very tall hemlock trees. We became curious about the area, pulled in and the next thing I knew, I was posing for a photo on a frozen lake that was covered with ice fishing huts. It was a beautiful area.
Since I’m starting a new chapter in my life, I decided to create a website to go along for the ride with me. I’ll be learning tons of stuff and I’d like to share all of that with you. One of my passions is tying knots. Don’t ask me why. I used to work in the tree care industry and that part of things must have stuck. I love knots, so I’ll be sharing my knowledge of them with you. I’ll also be contributing to and managing the forum quite actively and I hope to grow that so it maintains itself one day. I adore user forums, so that’s a priority. Otherwise, I simply want to have a good time with this website and to get to know people who think like I do. I think it’ll be fun.
If you love the outdoors and if you’re someone who loves to write high quality articles and capture stunning photography like I do, please reach out to me for a guest posting opportunity. I think it would be great to grow this website’s popularity and to help others who would like to grow theirs as well. Great minds think alike and I’d be very interested in what you have to say. Let’s expand this community together.
On a More Personal Note
I’m an avid writer and I’m hooked on learning things. My appetite is insatiable when it comes to this area of my life. If you’d like to visit some of my other blogs, please feel free to click through the links below.
I may blog a lot, but I haven’t created a blog for everything I do. I’m currently a student of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I am set to be awarded the rank of black belt during the summer of 2019. Right now, I have four stripes on my brown belt. I’ve been training for over ten years. This is me on the right. The photo was taken about five years ago.
I also play the guitar, which I practice every single night of my life for 45 minutes. This has been an extremely challenging endeavor, but I can definitely see progress being made. I have the utmost respect for musicians. Every single one of them deserves that. I now know the effort they put into their crafts. Here I am trying out a new guitar in Bangor, Maine in 2018.
If you’d like to reach me, please send me a message. I’ll respond as quickly as humanly possible. Thank you for reading a bit about me and this website!
